For a creative and visually intuitive way to prepare for the day, lds133 has designed a unique pictorial landscape weather display. Unlike traditional weather stations that rely on raw data such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed, this system simplifies forecasting through a scrolling cartoon landscape. It visually represents the upcoming weather using clever iconography, making it easier to grasp at a glance.
The display incorporates various landscape elements to convey forecast details. Trees indicate wind direction and strength, with palm trees representing southerly winds and pine trees for northerly winds, with tree height denoting wind intensity. The ground level rises and falls with temperature changes, while the sun and moon appear to mark sunrise and sunset. Cloud cover, rain, and snow are shown with simple animations.
What you’ll need:
To bring this concept to life, lds133 chose a 296×128 pixel Waveshare E-ink display. Its crisp visuals and ideal aspect ratio make it perfect for the task, while its low-power design suits the 15-minute update intervals. Behind the scenes, an ESP32 microcontroller runs a Python program to fetch data from the OpenWeather API, ensuring the display stays up-to-date with accurate forecasts.
This project stands out as a charming and practical alternative to standard weather stations. Its visually rich approach not only simplifies weather interpretation but also adds a touch of creativity to a daily routine, making it an appealing addition for those who prefer an artistic take on forecasting.
