Donutsorelse has developed a wearable Raspberry Pi-powered smart home controller with a Rick and Morty theme, designed to control home devices with AI and include playful Easter eggs like a “Mr. Meeseeks box.” This project combines functionality with creative flair, making it a standout device for fans of the show and tech enthusiasts alike.
The system is triggered by the keyword “Butler” for voice commands, enabling natural language interactions such as “Butler, turn on all the lights.” The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 serves as the main processing unit, integrated into an M5Stack CM4Stack Development Kit. For audio input, the device uses a DFRobot Unihiker board with a touchscreen. Cellular connectivity is handled by a Blues Notecarrier F, allowing the system to function remotely as long as a signal is available.
OpenAI’s API is utilized to process and understand voice commands, offering flexibility in phrasing. This makes it easier to control multiple devices simultaneously without needing specific instructions for each. A Flask server manages the system’s workflow, coordinating interactions between hardware, AI, and the connected smart home devices.
Designed as part of a Rick and Morty Halloween costume, the wearable device is compact and offers both practical smart home control and thematic entertainment. The inclusion of cellular connectivity and the use of conversational AI elevate it beyond typical smart home solutions. Full details on building this project, including assembly instructions and source code, can be found on Hackster.
