Wear Testing Different 3D Printer Filaments
Over the past couple of decades, 3D printing has transformed the landscape of custom object creation, offering unparalleled flexibility and accessibility. However, despite the wide array of available filaments, finding the most durable material remains a challenge. Seeking to address this, My Tech Fun embarked on a quest to evaluate the wear resistance of various 3D printed materials.
The experiment involved subjecting standard prints made from different materials, sourced from various manufacturers, to rigorous wear testing. Each test piece was mounted on a rig and subjected to repeated back-and-forth movements against a steel shaft under a 2.5 kg load.
Results indicated that while common and inexpensive PLA exhibited the lowest wear resistance, materials such as PETG, PA, and TPU performed notably better. Interestingly, significant disparities were observed among different brands of the same material, highlighting the impact of manufacturing quality on durability.
The findings underscore the importance of material selection in 3D printing, suggesting that investing in higher-quality filaments may yield superior results, particularly for applications subject to mechanical stress. Overall, the experiment offers valuable insights for 3D printing enthusiasts and underscores the significance of material choice in optimizing print performance.
