We can already install Android 13 on Raspberry Pi 4
It didn’t take long… thanks to the Android Open Source Project, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Pi 400 and Compute Module 4 got a taste of Android 13.
Android 13 was deployed on Google’s Pixels, despite a few hiccups… everything went relatively well. It will nevertheless be necessary to wait a few weeks and even a few months to take advantage of it on the smartphones of Google’s partner manufacturers. We have already been able to get our hands on the future version of ColorOS 13 for Oppo smartphones. The first third-party deployments usually take place from November.
In the meantime, Google hasn’t just rolled out Android 13 to Pixel smartphones, the American company has also made AOSP available. AOSP (for Android Open Source Project) is the open-source version of Android, it contains all the free code of Android. We end up with a functional version, but which lacks some functions including Google services. Thanks to this code, you can then implement the drivers there and install it on many devices.
Microcomputers taste Android 13
This is exactly what has been done on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Pi 400 and Compute Module 4 microcomputers. Everything is almost functional, including Wi-Fi, infrared transmitter, audio, USBs… the only problem is with video encoding and decoding.
Subsequently, we will see a lot of custom ROMs based on Android 13. This is one of Android’s strengths. As every year, we will enjoy Android 13 on very old devices before enjoying it on new ones.
