Printed Portable Computer Inspired by the Classics
Modern laptops have become quite standardized in their design, generally sharing similar shapes and features such as varying thicknesses, color options, and the occasional 360° hinge that allows them to function as tablets. This convergence on a common form factor reflects a consensus in the industry and among users about the optimal design for portability. However, this was not always the case. During the 1980s, manufacturers like Toshiba, Tandy, and IBM experimented with different approaches to the clamshell design, resulting in unique machines with ultra-wide displays and hinges positioned centrally, creating a distinctive “trunk” at the back.
Inspired by these classic designs, Michael Mayer created the Portable Pi 84, a modern homage to those vintage laptops. The project centers around a 3D-printed enclosure designed to accommodate a 40% ortholinear keyboard, based on the Happy-Keyboard by Luis Alegría. The rest of the design naturally followed, with a 1600 x 600 Waveshare 9.3-inch display that fits perfectly above the keyboard. This compact yet spacious layout allows for a sleek and functional device.
The Portable Pi 84’s rear compartment offers considerable space for system components, including a Raspberry Pi 4, a UPS “hat” powered by two 21700 batteries, and amplified speakers. This generous space also leaves room for additional features, such as an RTL-SDR or a cartridge slot. This flexibility highlights the potential for further customization and enhancement of the device.
One of the standout features of this build is the inclusion of inset panels at the back, which enable users to reconfigure ports and connectors without needing to reprint the entire case. For example, a user could easily swap in a panel with an external WiFi antenna connector. Additionally, the use of heat-set inserts throughout the case not only enhances the durability of the build but also allows the case to be opened and closed repeatedly without damaging the screw holes. This thoughtful design ensures that the Portable Pi 84 is both robust and adaptable, making it a practical and innovative modern tribute to vintage laptop designs.
