Print Your Own Magnetic Connector
Modern laptop chargers often feature magnetic connectors that snap into place effortlessly, a design that many DIY enthusiasts might want to replicate for their projects. DarthKaker has simplified this process by creating a magnetic connector setup, particularly useful if only two conductors are needed.
The design involves 3D-printed shells that house round magnets. The key is to ensure proper alignment: the north pole on one connector should face the south pole on the other. Additionally, if the polarity of the connection is important, each housing should contain one north-facing and one south-facing magnet to ensure the connectors only mate in the correct orientation.
In DarthKaker’s project, it appears that wires are either soldered or spot welded directly to the magnets. However, heating magnets can degrade their performance, so alternative methods might be preferable. One suggestion is to solder the wires to thin washers, which are then attached to the magnets with epoxy. Another approach could be to use the magnets purely for alignment, while designing a different mechanism for the electrical contacts, although this would require a redesign of the connector shells.
This project showcases a clever way to leverage the convenience of magnetic connectors in custom electronics, providing a practical and reusable solution for DIY enthusiasts.
