Arcade and gaming
The Arcade Kit DIY is a great starting point if you want to build your own arcade machine
Or if you just want to play arcade games on your TV all you need is a Raspberry Pi4 Model B 4GB kit with some gamepads and you are set.
Retropie and Recalbox are both available for easy installation using the Raspberry Pi Imager.
RetroPie allows you to turn your Raspberry Pi into a retro-gaming machine. It builds upon Raspbian, EmulationStation, RetroArch and many other projects. To enable you to play your favourite Arcade, home-console, and classic PC games with the minimum set-up. For power users it also provides a large variety of configuration tools to customise the system as you want.
RetroPie sits on top of a full OS. You can install it on an existing Raspbian, or start with the RetroPie image and add additional software later. It’s up to you.
Any Raspberry Pi model can run RetroPie, but we recommend using the Raspberry Pi 4 since its more powerful GPU, CPU, and RAM capabilities will maximize the range of games you can play. We recommend the 4GB version of the Raspberry Pi 4; RAM doesn’t matter too much beyond a certain point for emulating retro games.
A Raspberry Pi can play classic games, and a whole lot more. Build your own portable console, full-size arcade cabinet, and pinball machine with these step-by-step guides. And learn how to program your own games, using Python and Pygame Zero.
