The WikiHouse project is an innovative approach to modernize home construction, leveraging open-source principles and embracing the possibilities of CNC technology. This modular building system shares similarities with structural insulated panels (SIPs) but introduces a novel approach to on-site assembly.
WikiHouse employs a CNC to manufacture blocks made from plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), which are then insulated in a workshop before being transported to the construction site. This allows for a quick and efficient on-site assembly, offering the advantages of manufactured homes while promoting a more distributed manufacturing model.
One notable feature of WikiHouse is its commitment to design for disassembly. Many traditional houses generate significant waste during demolition, with reusable components often discarded along with the non-reusable materials. WikiHouse addresses this issue by considering the end-of-life phase during the design process, making it easier to recover and repurpose materials from the structure.
By combining modern manufacturing techniques, open-source collaboration, and a focus on sustainability, WikiHouse strives to provide an alternative and forward-thinking approach to home construction.
