Vela AI uses Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 to enable safety-conscious smart bikes
The utilization of Raspberry Pi extends beyond the realm of hobbyist projects, as evidenced by its integration into professional environments and commercial products like Velo AI’s Copilot device. In an interview with Raspberry Pi, the founders of Velo AI, Clarke Haynes and Micol Marchetti-Bowick, shared insights into the development journey of Copilot. Originally considering Nvidia Jetson boards, the team opted for Raspberry Pi due to its cost-effectiveness and adequate processing power, particularly when coupled with a Hailo AI co-processor.
Copilot serves as a transformative addition to bicycles, enhancing safety through intelligent features enabled by Raspberry Pi technology. Equipped with a camera, Copilot scans the surrounding environment for traffic, utilizing various notification signals to alert cyclists to potential hazards. Whether through audio cues or flashing LEDs, Copilot keeps cyclists informed about approaching vehicles, facilitating safer navigation on the road.


The core of the Copilot device lies in the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, acting as the primary processor alongside the Hailo AI co-processor for image processing tasks facilitated by an Arducam camera module. Designed with practicality in mind, Copilot features a mount for easy attachment to the bicycle’s seat post or saddle rail. Additionally, users can enhance their experience by accessing the Copilot app via smartphone, providing further control and customization options for optimal safety and convenience while cycling.
