Upgraded Automatic Workshop Dust Extraction
Several years ago, Atomic Dairy made a custom shop air cleaner known as the Fanboy. This was connected to an Arduino and sound sensor circuit so that it comes on automatically when using power tools. Unfortunately, it also comes on when it hears other sorts of noise, and was housed in a potentially flammable wooden box. His new controller, seen in the video below, is a revamped design with better sensing, a metal enclosure, and additional LEDs.
The heart of this revision is that instead of the Arduino turning on dust extraction when it hears noise, it waits a few seconds for activation to see if it’s a continuous sound. It also features a light sensor so that the device only activates if the lights are switched on, implying that there is someone actually trying to do work. These two factors together allow it to avoid a wide range of frustrating false triggers.
Aside from the new programming/sensor setup, the device now features 12 seven-segment display digits for fan time and microphone voltage readings. There’s also a Larson Scanner, which shows when the system is active. Finally, a “Film” button cuts power to the dust extractor while keeping the Arduino active, allowing for hassle-free video narration
