This Robot Picks Locks, If You’re Very Patient
The lock-picking robot developed by Sparks and Code is indeed a fascinating project that demonstrates an innovative approach to picking locks. By utilizing tough, thin wires passing through tiny holes in a blade shaped to fit the keyway, the robot can push all the pins up simultaneously, eliminating the need for specialized tools and tensioning of the cylinder.
However the design presents several challenges in practice. Accommodating multiple wires within the narrow confines of the keyway and guiding them to each pin can be difficult. Additionally, powering the linear actuators that control the movement of the wires requires careful engineering. Applying torque to the lock while ensuring the stability of the picking assembly adds further complexity to the design.
The fragility of the blade that goes into the keyway is another significant issue. While SLA printing was chosen for its precision, it may not be the most durable option for this application. Considering alternative materials or fabrication methods, such as using thin aluminum pieces with milled channels, could improve the robustness of the blade and enhance the overall reliability of the robot.
Despite these challenges, the lock-picking robot represents an innovative approach to locksport and automation. With further refinement and optimization, it has the potential to become a valuable tool for security professionals and enthusiasts alike.
