Maker Arnov Sharma has crafted the WalkPi, a Raspberry Pi MP3 player inspired by the retro Walkman. Powered by the Raspberry Pi Pico 2, it features a DF Mini Player module with a 24-bit DAC, enabling playback of MP3s stored on a microSD card. Instead of loading cassette tapes, users can enjoy their favorite tunes via a modern, compact interface.
The custom PCB design includes a SSD1306 OLED display for track info, buttons for volume and playback control, a power switch, and WS2812B LEDs for aesthetic and functional feedback. It’s portable thanks to a 3.7V battery and offers both an audio jack for headphones and a built-in speaker, making it versatile for personal or shared listening.
Sharma has made the WalkPi project open source, with a full parts list and build guide available on Hackster. The software, written in Arduino IDE, manages controls, LED features, display, and audio output. Check out the demo video on YouTube or follow the guide to create your own WalkPi!
