This Raspberry Pi keyholder will backup your flash drive data
With enough Raspberry Pi devices, you could create a highly automated smart home setup that would impress even a sci-fi captain like Captain Picard. There have been numerous innovative smart home projects, such as a ChatGPT-powered smart fridge and a Fallout-themed home automation terminal. However, sometimes it’s the smaller, more practical projects that make a significant difference. One such example is Thinklearndo’s latest Raspberry Pi-powered creation: a keyholder that automatically backs up data from any flash drive connected to it.
For those who frequently use flash drives, these devices often hold important and personal data. Losing this data can be a nightmare, which is why Thinklearndo developed this automatic backup solution. The system is simple: every night, when you plug your flash drive into the keyholder’s USB port, it automatically backs up the data over Wi-Fi. An LCD screen on the device provides status updates, letting you know when the backup is complete. In the morning, a button ensures you can safely remove the flash drive, giving you peace of mind as you grab your keys and go.
The keyholder is powered by a Raspberry Pi 3A+, though the latest Raspberry Pi 5 or the smaller Raspberry Pi Zero 2W could also be used. Thinklearndo designed a custom PCB to securely fit the Pi 3A+ and the LCD screen into a 3D-printed enclosure. This compact setup also includes additional buttons and hooks for hanging keys, making it a convenient and multifunctional device for a smart home.
The software for this project is open source and available on GitHub for anyone to explore and modify. The flexibility of the Raspberry Pi and its operating system allows for additional functionalities to be added. For example, users could easily add a temperature monitor or other sensors to enhance their smart home setup. This project exemplifies the potential of Raspberry Pi in creating practical, automated solutions for everyday needs.
