This Raspberry Pi Etch A Sketch bot will bring out your inner artist
Micah Tilton has ingeniously automated the drawing process on an Etch A Sketch using a Raspberry Pi 4 and stepper motors. By attaching the motors to the Etch A Sketch knobs with 3D printed adapters, the Raspberry Pi can precisely control the movement of the knobs to draw images onto the screen.
To achieve this, Tilton developed a program that converts existing images into a format suitable for the Etch A Sketch. This involves scaling the image to fit the Etch A Sketch resolution, converting it into black and white pixels, and determining the optimal single-line drawing path.
The resolution of the Etch A Sketch screen, roughly 300 x 214, was measured and converted to accommodate the stepper motors. The Raspberry Pi 4 serves as the control unit for the Etch A Sketch bot, but Tilton notes that smaller models like the Pi 3 or even the Zero 2 could also be used for this project.
Overall, Tilton’s project demonstrates a creative fusion of retro hardware with modern technology, showcasing the versatility and potential of the Raspberry Pi platform.
