Dial Up a Tune On the Jukephone

When stumbling upon an old corded phone with large buttons, the conventional options like getting a costly landline subscription or using VOIP and Bluetooth solutions may come to mind. However, Turi took a much cooler and creative approach by repurposing it into a jukebox. Instead of hearing a dial tone or someone’s voice when lifting the receiver, it now plays music. Additionally, a headphone jack on the back of the phone allows for private listening.
The modified phone’s functionality is impressive. Turi can select tracks either by dialing them directly or opt for a random track using the smaller buttons below. A directory neatly organizes hundreds of songs, with children’s tracks falling within the 1-99 range and a more intriguing “hits” category spanning 900-999. To make all of this work, a Raspberry Pi Pico is utilized for managing the key matrix and other buttons. The system relies on a DF Player Mini mp3 player to read tracks from an SD card, and power is supplied by a rechargeable 18650 battery, providing a truly unique and entertaining use for an old phone.
