Building a Giant Boardgame Isn’t Easy
Stevenson Streeper embarked on a significant project to prototype, design, and construct a 400-square-foot software-controlled board game. Commissioned by a client, the game was to resemble the concept of “The Floor Is Lava” and accommodate up to 20 players simultaneously. Documenting his journey on his blog, Stevenson shares the challenges and triumphs encountered during the development process.
As the founder of a company specializing in delivering immersive experiences, Stevenson was no stranger to ambitious projects. However, this endeavor presented unique obstacles due to its scale, limited resources, and tight deadline. Challenges included unexpected issues with off-the-shelf hardware and the laborious task of hand-sanding 144 tiles of polycarbonate. Early setbacks, such as encountering undocumented features in AliExpress tiles, added complexity to the project’s initial stages.
Despite these hurdles, Stevenson’s perseverance and problem-solving skills allowed him to overcome obstacles and progress toward realizing the client’s vision. Through meticulous planning, creative solutions, and relentless dedication, he navigated the complexities of designing and constructing a large-scale interactive game board.
