Backyard LED Sculpture Inspired By Las Vegas Sphere
The Las Vegas Sphere is an imposing structure, standing at an impressive 112 meters in height and 157 meters in width, adorned with a sprawling 54,000 square meters of LED displays. However, replicating such a colossal setup at home would be an immense undertaking for the average maker. Fortunately, DrZzs & GrZzs have taken a more achievable approach by crafting a scaled-down version known as the Pixelhead Megasphere.
The Pixelhead Megasphere, with its more manageable dimensions of 1.98 meters in height and 2.4 meters in diameter, offers an accessible alternative that can comfortably fit in an average backyard. In addition to its practical size, it comes with a significantly smaller price tag compared to the staggering $2 billion cost of the Las Vegas Sphere. The scaled-down version boasts an impressive 20,028 individually addressable LED pixels, powered by four 12-volt 100-amp power supplies. Currently operating at 15% brightness, it has the capacity to shine even brighter, potentially pushing those power supplies to their limits. Control is achieved through Xlights, with the LEDs interfaced via Kulp controller boards, allowing for a range of captivating animations and designs, including a striking rendition of the “eye of Sauron.”
DrZzs & GrZzs’s Pixelhead Megasphere serves as a remarkable example of how creative makers can replicate grand-scale projects on a more achievable and budget-friendly scale, offering an exciting canvas for experimentation and design, especially during festive seasons like Halloween.
