Air Hockey Table Embraces DOOM, Retro Gaming
Over the course of an impressive two-year project, [Chris Downing] has showcased a culmination of his diverse skill set by creating a smart air hockey table with a nostalgic twist. The standout features include a score board equipped with an LCD screen and sound, and a play surface adorned with densely-populated RGB LED lighting capable of various eye-catching tricks. The table offers multiple modes of play, including a DOOM mode that pits one player as Demons and the other as the Doom Slayer. In this mode, the LED array transforms the play surface into flickering flames, with screams indicating goals.
The primary play mode provides traditional air hockey with automated score tracking and celebratory horns and buzzers for goals. The LED array within the table mimics the appearance and patterns of a standard hockey rink. Notably, the project’s versatility is enhanced by Emulation Mode, where the Raspberry Pi-driven table allows players to engage in retro gaming on the scoreboard screen. A unique aspect of this mode is the mirrored display on the tabletop’s LED array, providing a visually captivating experience reminiscent of classic retro games.
The meticulous craftsmanship and integration of retro gaming elements into a modern air hockey table underscore [Chris]’s technical prowess and creative innovation. The project seamlessly blends the appeal of vintage gaming with contemporary technology, offering a unique and entertaining gaming experience for enthusiasts and casual players alike.
