If you’re a snorer, chances are you’ve been made aware of it in one way or another. Maybe a loved one has given you a gentle nudge in the ribs during the night, or your kids have playfully teased you about your nocturnal orchestra. Well, in such situations, you might want to consider building this AI-powered haptic snore detector.
The standout feature of snoring is, naturally, the sound it produces. That’s precisely what inspired Naveen Kumar to create this innovation. To distinguish snoring from other nighttime noises, he opted for an Arduino Nicla Voice sensor board, which boasts a Syntiant NDP120 deep-learning processor and a built-in MEMS microphone. Training the system required a snoring dataset, which, surprisingly, is readily available. This dataset included not only genuine snoring but also non-snoring sounds like sirens and thunder. The model was trained using an online tool and then loaded onto the board. When it identifies the unmistakable sound of snoring three times in a row, a haptic driver board gently vibrates the pillow, prompting you to adjust your sleeping position.
Although snoring can be the subject of jokes, it’s not a trivial matter. It can affect your well-being and the sleep quality of those around you. Kudos to Naveen for coming up with a practical solution that can discreetly alert you to a potential snoring issue, which might warrant a closer look from a healthcare professional.
