This Tiny Game Boy Lets the Real Thing Play Online
In 2021, stacksmashing demonstrated that a Raspberry Pi Pico and some level-shifters could create a USB connection with the Game Boy’s link port, enabling online multiplayer for the classic handheld. This setup was affordable, and the software was open-source.
Inspired by this, weiman developed a new version of the USB link adapter that fits inside a miniature 3D printed Game Boy. The updated design uses the smaller RP2040-Zero development board, paired with a SparkFun logic level converter board and a custom PCB with edge connectors for direct Game Boy Link Cable connection. The assembled PCB is housed in a detailed 3D printed shell, where the d-pad and buttons can trigger the RP2040-Zero’s RESET or BOOTSEL buttons, and the screen aligns with the board’s RGB LED for visual effects.
stacksmashing’s original project showcased the Pi Pico’s capabilities, and weiman’s refined version continues to innovate and inspire within the community.
