In May 2023, CNCDan embarked on creating a powerful handheld gaming console named NucDeck, powered by an Intel NUC7i5BNK. The feature-packed device includes a 1024 x 600 screen, stereo-chambered speakers, two thumbsticks with gyro aim assist, hall effect triggers, and various buttons for comprehensive input. A Raspberry Pi Pico serves as an input device, emulating a mouse and keyboard or a traditional gamepad based on the mode. Four custom PCBs, communicating over I2C, manage the intricate hardware, and a small OLED screen displays essential information.
Designed with accessibility in mind, NucDeck incorporates easily obtainable parts, making it a feasible DIY project. The open-source nature of the project, with detailed build instructions and files available on GitHub, emphasizes CNCDan’s commitment to community collaboration. The device’s thoughtful design, from the transparent case to the meticulous build instructions, showcases the considerable time and dedication invested in creating NucDeck.
