Raspberry Pi Zero 2W uses 6mm screen in ultra-tiny Steam Deck build
The world of microelectronics continues to shrink, leading makers like Basically Homeless to explore the realm of impractically small peripherals. In their latest YouTube video, Basically Homeless showcases what they claim to be the world’s smallest gaming monitor, ingeniously connected to the Raspberry Pi single-board computer (SBC).
While the Raspberry Pi has been utilized in tiny gaming handhelds before, this project stands out with its use of a Pi Zero to drive the minuscule screen. With a resolution of 640 x 480 and a diagonal span of under 6mm, the monitor offers a compact yet intriguing display solution.
Although the practicality of such a tiny gaming monitor may be debatable, the primary aim of the project is amusement rather than utility. Unfortunately, details about the screen’s origin remain scarce, but Basically Homeless provides an overview of its specifications in the video.
The Raspberry Pi Zero 2W serves as the brain behind the operation, and Essentially Homeless incorporates joy-con modules for input, adding buttons and analog joysticks to the Raspberry Pi setup. This configuration transforms the device into an all-in-one gaming system, operated with ease.
With a range of operating systems available for the Raspberry Pi, Essentially Homeless opts for the reliable Raspberry Pi OS. Through this, they successfully run a Minecraft knockoff on the super tiny display, achieving a commendable 15 frames per second.
