Raspberry Pi RP2040 spotted in super tiny unofficial Game Boy handheld
Maker Elliot Coll recently stumbled upon an intriguing find while browsing Aliexpress—a miniature retro gaming emulator handheld featuring what appears to be a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microprocessor. Priced at around $85 USD, the handheld boasts a compact design reminiscent of the original Game Boy, complete with a D-pad, A, B, Start, and Select buttons.
Upon closer inspection, Coll discovered that the handheld utilizes a custom PCB housing the RP2040 microprocessor. While details about the software handling the emulation or ROM files remain unclear, the cartridge slot on the back serves as a microSD card slot for loading ROMs. Powered by a LiPo battery, the handheld requires a LiPo charging module for portable use.
Despite the lack of clear information regarding the operating system or firmware, Coll managed to navigate the menu options—albeit with some trial and error due to the Chinese text. While the handheld performs well as a retro gaming device, Coll noted that its small size made it challenging to view games on the tiny screen.
