Memory Box Shows Photos Based On Fingerprint
With his son’s birthday approaching, Mike Buss embarked on a heartfelt project to create a lifelong keepsake. Inspired by the idea of a memory box with a twist, he envisioned a unique creation incorporating a fingerprint scanner to display different pictures based on the user’s print. Beginning with sketches, [Mike] translated his vision into a digital model using Blender, carving out a space for an E-ink screen in the lid.
However, the project encountered its share of hurdles early on. A defective E-ink screen marred progress, followed by complications with an SD card reader and a malfunctioning fingerprint scanner attributed to power supply issues. Undeterred, Mike persevered, ultimately transitioning from an ESP32 to a Raspberry Pi Zero W to streamline the photo retrieval process based on fingerprints.
A crucial lesson emerged from the challenges faced: the importance of striking a balance between meticulous planning and taking decisive action. Reflecting on his experience, Mike acknowledged that a more comprehensive consideration of the project’s intricacies could have led to the adoption of a single-board computer solution earlier in the process. Despite setbacks, the project serves as a testament to Mike’s dedication and creativity, culminating in a unique and meaningful creation for his son. Check out the build video for a closer look at the journey.
