Make Your Own Remy the Rat This Halloween
Christina Ernst crafted an amazing Halloween project, creating her own version of Remy the rat from the movie Ratatouille. Just like in the film, her Remy perches on top of her head, seemingly guiding her actions by pulling her hair like a marionette. The setup cleverly uses a sturdy headband to secure everything in place while concealing two sub-micro servos, one for each of Remy’s arms. These servos control small, subtle movements, which in turn make Remy’s actions, like tugging on locks of hair, appear even more pronounced and lifelike.
Initially, Remy’s motions were random, but Ernst took it a step further by integrating an MPU6050 accelerometer. This sensor captures the vertical movements of her own arm and syncs them with Remy’s actions, making the puppet’s movements more responsive and in tune with hers. The MPU6050 sensor is a cost-effective, accessible component, available through many online sources, making it easy to incorporate into similar projects.
For anyone inspired to recreate or adapt the concept, Christina generously shared the 3D models and code on GitHub. She also showcases the project in action on her TikTok and Instagram accounts, offering a visual guide for anyone interested in making their own Halloween animatronic puppet with a personal twist.
