ESP32 Freezer Alarm Keeps Tabs on Tricky Door

Accidentally leaving the freezer door open can result in a chaotic kitchen mess. Guy Dupont faced this frustration with a freezer that regularly failed to close properly, leading to frequent meltdowns. To combat this issue, he devised a clever digital solution.
His innovative creation blends an ESP32 with a reed switch activated by a magnetic sensor on the freezer door. When the door is open, the reed switch remains in an open state. The ESP32 periodically checks the switch’s status, and if the door remains open for two consecutive checks, an alarm is triggered. Guy receives a WiFi notification, enabling him to swiftly address the issue. Running on a 400 mAh battery, the system operates for slightly over three weeks, conducting door checks every two minutes. Despite a potential straightforward fix like repositioning the freezer, Guy chose a technological route to tackle the problem. His creative project showcases the potential of digital solutions for everyday challenges. This isn’t the first instance of a fridge alarm, and with the continuous improvement of innovative solutions, it’s unlikely to be the last.
