Building Robots With A 20×20 Grid
Nikodem Bartnik is tackling the challenges of autonomous robot development by focusing on simplifying the mechanical aspect with the Open Robotic Platform (ORP). This modular robotics chassis system aims to streamline prototyping by offering an easy and affordable solution. Governed by a set of design rules to ensure interchangeability, the ORP features standardized mounting plates with a 20 mm grid pattern of 3.5 mm mounting holes. These plates can be stacked using connecting rods, providing a versatile foundation for mounting various components.
The key feature of ORP is its emphasis on modularity, allowing users to mix and match components to suit their specific needs. Nikodem is actively building a library of modular components, ranging from custom 3D-printed holders for sensors, motors, wheels, and development boards to homemade PCBs designed to snap directly onto the chassis. While the platform encourages creativity by not limiting manufacturing methods or materials, 3D printing and laser cutting are likely to be popular choices for producing custom parts, ensuring accessibility for hobbyists and professionals alike.
